Module 1: Understanding How Equity by Design Works

TIMING: You’ll spend a minimum of 1 week in this module after completion of Lesson 1.
Watch video to end.

By the End of this Module…

You will have assessed the “current reality” of  your school context and classroom.

You will understand the algorithm of equity by design through the lens of Elmore’s instructional core.

You will have identified two (2) practices to stop doing based on your assessment.

You will have established 2 of 5 components of an intellectually safe classroom.

OVERVIEW

This module lays the groundwork for the spiraling curriculum that runs throughout our PLC.

Building a foundation for a new building requires us to till the ground, clear old structures, and prepare the site for something new.

In this module, we are aiming to do just that.  We need to think about what needs to be cleared away before we begin to build new structures and processes. But we have a tendency in education to just add new things — new policies, new strategies, new initiatives — right on top of old practices. For many, culturally responsive teaching is just that — the newest fad. And, if we don’t build a solid foundation, it will be just a passing fad with no real impact.  Our goal is different. We want to build new structures, new practices, and policies that will interrupt the invisible mechanisms of inequity by design.

Our essential questions as we move through this module are:

  • How will we think differently about how to reduce our achievement gaps?
  • What new actions do we need to take to create the conditions for successfully interrupting and redesigning instruction?
  • How will we engage our students differently to get them to take ownership of their learning?

Remember our CRE by Design mantra — Information is not transformation.

The learning is in the doing.  Take the time to do the exercises in each lesson in order to begin to build capacity and get the most of our PLC structure.
