Module 4: Designing Responsive Instruction for Deeper Learning

By the End of this Module…

You will recognize through the culturally responsive lesson design template that creating culturally responsive curriculum is more than just including diverse authors or anti-racist content topics.

You will become familiar with the components of the Ready for Rigor Instructional Lesson Design methodology that attend to the teacher-to-content area of the instructional core triangle.

You will learn four different options for redesigning curricular content so that it is cognitively sticky and capture’s the brain’s attention.

OVERVIEW

In this module we are going to dig deeper into how we begin building students’ capacity to carry more of the cognitive load. We are going to start that process by reviewing and deconstructing the Ready for Rigor Instructional Design template.

The framework is based on the concepts in Chapter 8 of Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain, in particular ignite, chunk, chew and review.

The template operationalizes the Information Processing quadrant on the Ready for Rigor frame.

The lessons in this module are a mix of the technical as we walk through the first sections of the template and the adaptive as we think about the instructional design work needed to use the information gathered from the Module 3 Cultural Empathy Map with your regular curriculum to make content more responsive and relevant.

Above it all, we want to keep in the back of our mind the instructional core — the teacher, the student, and the content are always in a dynamic dance with one another. Change one of these elements and you must shift the other to to maintain alignment,” to paraphrase Dr. Richard Elmore as the “dojo” we are preparing for students.
