Focus on CHEW to Expand Students’ Intellectual Capacity

OUTCOMES

I understand the basic function of the CHEW section of the the Ready for Rigor lesson design frame in helping all students, but especially dependent learners, increase student intellectual capacity

I understand why it is essential to include information processing goals alongside content learning targets when designing culturally responsive instruction

I recognize the connection between the learning pit metaphor, productive struggle as a learning behavior, and the necessity of including authentic “chew” opportunities in order for students to expand their intellectual capacity

I understand the basics of the science of learning and its connection to culturally responsive instruction

Now that we are familiar with the lesson template, in this lesson we want to focus on the CHEW portion of the Ignite, Chunk, Chew, and Review algorithm.

It is important to understand that this is the missing element in most instructional equity efforts. We don’t teach students how to become more powerful learners who can “chew” on the content so that the very process makes them smarter. This is where the potential to shift equity outcomes lives.

But this CHEW section of lesson design is about more than “hands on, active learning” activities. Chewing is about teaching students to engage in productive struggle and increase their “learning to learn” skills along the way. Typical active learning activities are about getting through the lesson while chew activities are about building intellectual capacity for the long haul.

In this lesson, we will focus on deepening our own understanding of the connection between the learning pit metaphor, productive struggle as a learning behavior, and the importance of having “learning how to learn” goals that focus on improving information processing.
