Mistaking Cultural Differences for Deficits

OUTCOMES

I will begin to recognize the way deficit views are normalized in my context.

I will understand the microaggressions that flow from a deficit view of cultural differences.

I will be able to distinguish between stereotyping and using my bi-cultural lens.

When we talk about issues of belonging and learning and what that looks like in action, we typically use a Eurocentric model.

When it comes to the affective (or what we now call “social-emotional”), what is it that people say or do in a given situation that shows connection or care? What does a healthy expression of human emotions look like through another cultural lens?  Or how about communication patterns?

This is where we run into deficit views of cultural differences. And this is where issues of racism and culture get co-mingled. We begin “othering” people through their cultural differences.

In this lesson, you are going to take time to take a closer look at deficit thinking and its interplay with cultural ways of being within a school setting.

ACTION ITEM

Who are “those kids” in your context (i.e., school community, subject area?)
